Last Satuday’s Rally

9 12 2009

The rally exceeded pretty much everyone’s expectations. We had a turn out of around 60 to 70 people. I (Ethan) gave a talk, as did Nic Suzor, chairman of the EFA. I will create a few articles/posts covering some of the points I raised in detail.

An attendee filmed the rally and uploaded it. I have two other copies sitting on my hard drive that need to be uploaded.

Good start, everyone. As I mentioned, just keep getting the word out there. I will let everyone know about my next event sometime in the near future.

Aliens vs Predator has been Refused Classification

4 12 2009

The Classification Board has Refused Classification to the upcoming Aliens vs Predator game.

I would honestly like to know if there’s anything more graphic in this game than the face melting scene in the movie Aliens vs Predator: Requiem. The Classification Board has yet to release the reasoning behind its decision.

Modern Warfare 2 doesn’t need reclassification

So, Atkinson is to appeal the MW2 classification after all.

I’m all for applying the same standards for classification to all media. With this in mind, I ask: what exactly would cause the game to not be rated MA15?

Is it violent? Yes, but can you say it’s more violent than Saving Private Ryan?

Is it bloody? Yes, but can you say it’s more bloody than District 9?

Is it graphic? Yes, but can you say it’s more graphic than Children of Men?

Is it confronting? Yes, but can you say it’s more confronting than Elephant?

I have used four movies rated MA15+ in Australia as examples. These films are available on DVD and can be purchased just as freely as MA15+ rated video games. I have played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 thoroughly and I can honestly say that this game has not been more violent, bloody, graphic, or confronting than those movies.

It saddens me that more time and money will be spent by the Government on this game than is necessary. Perhaps the collective “I told you so” from the general public after the game has been reclassified MA15+ will make Mr Atkinson pause and rethink. More likely though, it will turn him against the Classification Review Board as well. The fight may be about to get harder, ladies and gentlemen.

In case you missed it…

I left a link to a petition for the introduction of R18+ games to Queensland legislation in the events page. I’ve seen it mentioned around enough that I realised I should have made it more visible in the first place.

My own personal view on the matter is to sign it. As it’s a Queensland legislation petition, you need to be a Queenslander to do so.

However, the fact that it’s being done at the state level is unfortuante. Queensland is the state that still has a ban on Category 1 and 2 Restricted print media. While I started Treat Us Like Adults with the intention of getting the gaming classification system overhauled, that is by no means the only thing I’m interested in. I’m of the opinion that a complete reform of the system should be made, and that all media should fall under the same classification system and guidelines. I am also for taking power away from the States to create and enforce additional legislature to the classification system . It is unfair to the citizens of our country that people in one state can’t read, watch, or play the same material as other states.

My hope is that if the petition is successful, this schism will be higlighted and acted upon.

Atkinson replies

19 11 2009

The usual modus operandi when people get a reply from Atkinson is to paste the email.

I am not going to do that.

The Hon Michael Atkinson informed me that he is unable to attend my rally due to attending a wedding on that day.

Stay tuned for further news.

UPDATE: He has expressed interest in a future event I have in mind. For now though, I’m concentrating on the rally.

To the Hon Michael Atkinson, MP

I have heard you’re not afraid of a fight in regards to your position on the R18+ debate.

To that end, I cordially invite you to attend the rally I am organising in Brisbane on the 5th of December. If you want a real challenge on your viewpoints, then come hear what I have to say.

Thank you,

Ethan Watson.
